Relaxing...and good for your body!

Sure, we already know that receiving a massage is super relaxing and stress relieving, but massages actually are good for your body.  Besides making you feel new and refreshed, massages can alleviate low-back painenhance your immune system by stimulating your lymph flow and improve your circulation by pumping oxygen and nutrients into tissues and organs, among other benefits.

When was the last time you treated your body to one?  If it’s been a while, check out Massage Envy (3330 Piedmont Rd, Suite 26) in Buckhead…just minutes away from Uptown Buckhead apartments.  First time guests at Massage Envy can enjoy a one-hour massage for only $39.  You can even win a free massage by entering their weekly drawing from now through December.(Photo Credit: MyNewsletterBuilder)

Summertime Peach Soup

With the summer heat beginning to blaze down, most of probably won’t be having a lot of soup for dinner over the next few months.  Soup is traditionally a cold weather meal, as the warm liquid broth serves to keep our insides warm.

But for soup enthusiasts here at Uptown Buckhead that are waiting the warm weather out, there are alternative recipes that just might satisfy your palate and won’t leave you sweating bullets in the heat.  Particulary, fruit soups are becoming the new “it” item on summer time menus.  Many can be served either hot or cold.

Check out the recipe for Peachy Ginger Soup I found.  Sound delicious?  Head down to the Peachtree Road Farmers Market, grab some fresh, in-season Georgia peaches and try it out!

Peachy Ginger Soup

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 pounds fresh peaches – peeled, pitted and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 1/3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons rum

Directions

  1. Puree the peaches and ginger together in a food processor or blender. Stir in heavy cream and rum. Chill. Serve cold.

Intensify Your Push-Up

two-girls-exercising-cayucos-beach1 by mikebaird. If you’ve ever worked out with a trainer, you know they always tell you to work your core.  That’s the area around your abdominals and lower-back that essentially connects your lower-body muscles to your upper-body muscles.  It’s important to keep that area fit and strong as it ehances your overall body strength.   Check out this tip on strengthening your core that I found online in the 15 Best Workout Tips of all time

“Squat-thrust push-ups get you in great shape because they work your upper body, core and lower body and improve agility, strength and endurance all at once. From a standing position, bend down, put your hands on the floor shoulder-width apart, and jump your feet back into plank position. If you’re strong, cross your ankles; otherwise, jump your feet wide apart. Do a push-up, then jump your feet together or uncross your ankles. Jump your feet back to your hands and stand up. Do eight reps total, rest for one minute, and repeat.”

–Keli Roberts, Los Angeles — based trainer

What do you think?  I’ll usually try any new excercise at least once.  Luckily Uptown Buckhead has a fitness center to get a quick workout in too.

Do you shop for your fresh food and produce locally? If not, you may want to give it some serious consideration. Although today’s global market allows us to buy foods grown almost anywhere in the world at any given time, this option is not the most sustainable.

Buying in-season fruits and vegetables that are locally grown helps to eliminate the environmental damage caused by shipping foods across the country – and in some cases – the world. Not only does your food dollar go directly to the farmers, but you’re able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, better tasting, unprocessed produce. According to the National Resources Defense Council, in-season foods for the state of Georgia (and surrouning areas) include:

Blueberries
Cabbage
Carrots
Greens
