Why Did I Get Married Too?

Gathered together in the Bahamas for their annual one-week reunion, four close couples eagerly reconnect, sharing news about their lives and relationships. But their intimate week in paradise is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Sheila’s ex-husband, Mike, who hopes to break up her new marriage with Troy and win her back. The others soon realize they too are not immune to the challenges of commitment and fidelity.  Rated PG-13.  Starring Janet Jackson, Tyler Perry.

So thanks to Redbox, I finally got around to seeing Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too.”  Although I’m not too much into his movies, I liked the first of this series and wanted to keep up with the story.  My wife and I have a group of couples that we vacation with every now and then, and although our problems aren’t the same as the couples in the move, it does help to see how others get through relationship issues, even if it is “just a movie.”

Check it out if this week if you can.  It’s only a dollar and you probably have a long Labor Day weekend.  The closest Redbox kiosks to Uptown Buckhead are at Kroger (3330 Piedmont Rd NE, 3871 Peachtree Rd NE and 4920 Roswell Rd NE).

Midtown Restaurant Week, Sept. 4-12

Easily, one of the best things about living in Atlanta is the sheer number of dining options that its residents have on a daily basis.  There are soooo many options.  And in my humble opinion, one of the best ways to experience the city’s many offerengs is to take advantage of the prix fixe specials that are offered during events like restaurant weeks.  That way, you can experience a full course meal (usually a dish that the location’s chef wants to highlight) at a discounted price.

If you remember, Buckhead had its Ultimate Restaurant Week back in May.  Well, now it’s time for Midtown to shine.  From Saturday, September 4 until Sunday, September 12, you can enjoy Midtown’s best restaurants as they showcase their best dishes during Midtown Restaurant Week.  Each participating restaurant will offer a three-course menu for $25.  If you do the math, for three-courses, that’s a pretty good deal.

Participating restaurants include 4th & Swift, Atmosphere, Diesel, The Nook, Lobby at Twelve, ONE Midtown Kitchen, STRIP and many more.  To see a full list of participating restaurants and make reservations, check out www.atlrestaurantweek.com.  And don’t miss this opportunity to find your next favorite Atlanta restaurant dish!

This Badgley Mischka Sweetheart Bubble Dress retails for $475. You can rent it for $50!

So you’ve got a big event coming up.  Maybe it’s your boss’ fancy wedding that you have to attend, or maybe even just a special date at a posh new restaurant during Midtown Restaurant Week.  Either way, you want to wear something that impresses.  But you don’t want to break the bank doing so, right?  You can always throw on your trusty little black dress (assuming it’s an evening wedding)…or you can hit up Rent The Runway.

Ever heard of it?  It’s a pretty cool service that allows you ladies to trick your friends and neigbors at Uptown Buckhead Apartments into thinking that you have a closet full of designer clothes.  In most cases, for less than $100, you can rent the hottest new runway fashions to wear at any special occasion you desire.  And yes, they even rent accessories and jewelry too.

If this sounds like it could be you’re kind of thing, check out their website at RentTheRunway.com and see what stylings they have to offer!

Non-smokers save money on renter’s insurance

Do you currently carry renter’s insurance?  Uptown Buckhead Apartments strongly advises their residents to get a policy.  It’s really not as expensive as you may think.  In fact, you can save money on your policy in quite a few ways.  Here is one in an article I found about saving money on renter’s insurance.  Check out this video too.

Non-Smoking Household: Insurers are trying to cut costs too therefore are looking for people to insure that pose the least risk. Since a lot of accidental fires are caused by smokers, renter’s insurance companies are often giving a renter’s insurance quote and policy discount for non-smoking households.

Nothing beats taking in an Atlanta Braves game with your best buds!

I have to tip my hat to the Atlanta Braves promotion team.  They’ve come up with a really cool idea for pet owners who want to spend some fun time with their dogs.  Of course Uptown Buckhead is extremely pet-friendly so we ahve to support it.

They’re hosting a Bark in the Park day at Turner Field, which is basically a game that you can bring your dog to.  Bark in the Park will be held on August 29 when the NL East leading Braves take on the Florida Marlins.

Coca-Cola Sky Field is transformed into a doggie’s delight, complete with on-site veterinary services in case your friend over-indulges or overheats, doggie pools, water misters and plenty of watering holes since seating is not shaded. Fans must pre-register at www.braves.com/bark and proof of certain vaccinations is required. Walk-up tickets are not available. The game starts at 1:35 p.m. but the festivities begin as early as 11 a.m.

Tickets for Bark in the Park go for $25, and that covers one “human” and one “canine”.  Additional human tickets are only $12.  For more info on the event or the inquire about registration, call 404-522-7630 or visit www.braves.com/bark.

Did you know that actress Julia Roberts was actually born “Julie Roberts”.  But when she when went to register for her SAG (Screen Actors Guild), that name was already taken.  Instead, she chose to use “Julia”.  That may not be enough of an interesting fact to make you want to see her latest movie, but maybe some of the beautiful scens shot in Italy, Bali and India will.  Check out the trailer below.

If you need showtimes for theaters around Buckhead, here are AMC Fork& Screen Buckhead, AMC Phipps Plaza 14 and Regal Hollywood 24.

"Wanna play?"

A nice, clean apartment community that is also pet-friendly is certainly coveted prize, especially one in a convenient intown location like Buckhead.  Who wouldn’t want  a great apartment that they can share with their best four-legged friend.  One of the small challenges, however, of living in an apartment with your dog is getting them to a pet-friendly location where they can run around and get some excercise.

Well, by next month, intown residents will have one more great location that they can add to the list of their pooch’s favorite places, as Piedmont Park (10th Street and Piedmont Road) will officially open it’s enlarged dog park.  Their three-acre dog run, located at the Park Drive Bridge, will get added trails, landscaping, benches and restrooms.

They are hosting a grand opening celebration on August 12 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and for a $50 donation, your pet can get a unique commemorative bone-shaped plaque inscribed with his name.  They also have a $5 admission option to the event that gets you and your dog an exclusive, pre-opening sneak peak as well as refreshments and a take home doggie bag!  So if you have no plans for that day, make a date with your dog!  For more info, call 404-875-7275.

You like popsicles, don’t you?

I’m assuming you answered yes.  My suggestion:  find the King of Pops.

What is King of Pops, you ask…well, one day about a year ago, a guy named Steven Carse decided that he didn’t want to pursue his career in the insurance busines and would have much more fun in life slinging gourmet popsicles (aka paletas).  He came up with the idea while he and his brothers were traveling in Mexico a few years ago, and it just stuck.  Thankfully for us, that idea is now a reality!

Carse starts off with the freshest local ingredients that Atlanta has to offer and magically turns them into exotic iced flavors, such Strawberry Rhubabrb, Lemon Lavender, Strawberry Mojito and Tangerine Honey.  All are all wildly popular.  He even does deals with local lunch spots.  For example, on Mondy he took his cart to Souper Jenny (56 E Andrews Drive Northwes) where the restaurant gave pops to everyone that bought lunch.  Kinda like a value meal…but better.

Although the King mostly keeps his popsicle cart in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood, he does travel around to other aread throughout the week.  Just follow him on Twitter @TheKingofPops to find where he will be!

Anyone up for a flavor tripping party?

June 23, 2010 by Chris

Yeah, you read it right.  I said flavor tripping.  Now before you go calling the narcs on me, you should know this has nothing to do with any illegal substances.  Rather, “flavor tripping” is the new slang term for the lastest craze to come out of the NYC culinary scene.

the miracle fruit...in all its blooming glory

It involves a tiny tic-tac sized, West African berry fascinatingly titled “miracle fruit”.  So you’re probably wondering just what this berry does.  According to a NY Times article, “the berry rewires the way the palate perceives sour flavors for an hour or so, rendering lemons as sweet as candy.”

Basically, it completely alters your tastebuds.  Swirl some lemon sorbet into your Guinnes Stout and taste chocolate cake.  Put a drop of Tobasco sauce on your tounge and taste donut glaze.  Goat cheese now tastes like cheesecake.  You get the picture.

Sound interesting?  There’s a new lounge in Sandy Springs that is offereing up the experience to the adventurous types.  On Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, and for a mere $20, Three Sheets (6017 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, 404.303.8423) will set you up with your own miracle fruit berry and an assortment of food items to sample.  But don’t plan on it this week, or next, as their flavor tripping parties are selling out fast.  Your best bet is to make a reservation online.  Or if you’d like, hit up the Miracle Fruit Man and host your own party.

Yeah! Burger

Yeah! Burger

I’m all for fine dining, but some night there is just no substitute for a great burger?  Am I right, folks?  Chef Shaun Doty has ventured into the current burger craze hitting Atlanta.  His newly opened restaurant, Yeah! Burger is on the west side off 14th Street.  Shaun prides the fact that his new establishment is a socially responsible, eco friendly restaurant that utilizes local organic beef and produce.

Yeah! has already been featured on Fox 5’s Good Day Atlanta and on Atlanta Daily Candy.  For more information on hours and directions, their website and be sure to ‘Like’ their Facebook page to stay up on the “going on’s” at the restaurant.  Holla!
